Interdependence

In some of our Communities, people with an intellectual disability live in the unit they always dreamed of.  Yet people are still an integral part of the local Community.  L’Arche is first and foremost a network of relationships that will support people to take new risks and to grow.

L’Arche has always supported people to be independent if someone wants to live alone.  What we have continually discovered is that while people might live in their own place they are interdependent through their desire to continue to be in relationship with Community members and by attending Community events.  There is a natural tension between independence and a desire for community. What we all need is a balance between the freedom of independence and the security of Community.
